Over eleven months, pressure on a NATO ally's territory escalated from an offhand annexation threat to refusals to rule out military force, tariff threats against Europe, leaked private messages, and a hospital ship.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark — a NATO ally. This thread tracks, in order and with sources, the U.S. campaign to acquire it: the public statements, the threats, the diplomatic incidents, and the symbolic gestures. As with the other threads, the entries are presented chronologically so the trajectory is visible on its own.

Speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey on July 7, 2026, President Donald Trump revived his campaign to seize the semi-autonomous Danish territory, telling reporters that Greenland “should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark.” He argued that “Denmark doesn’t spend money to really help Greenland, but it’s an important part for the United States, and it’s surrounded by China ships and Russian ships,” and suggested the U.S. could pull its troops from Europe over the allies’ continued refusal to hand the island over. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejected the demand at the summit, saying it is “well known” that the U.S. “wants to own and take over Greenland” but that “this is not going to happen.” Greenland’s foreign minister, Mute Egede, said the territory’s future would be decided by its own people: “That’s how it has always been. And that’s how it always will be.”
