The Obama Fixation

From the racist “birther” lie to AI videos of the Obamas as apes, from branding his predecessor a traitor to hiding his portrait from the White House — a fifteen-year fixation, tangled up with Trump’s naked envy of the Nobel Peace Prize Obama won and he never has.

No one lives in Donald Trump’s head like Barack Obama. It began in 2011 with the racist “birther” lie that America’s first Black president was secretly foreign-born and illegitimate, and it has never stopped. This thread lays out, in order and with sources, the long campaign of attacks on Obama and his family: the manufactured “treason” accusations and the Justice Department strike force built to chase them; the AI deepfakes of Obama being handcuffed and of the Obamas rendered as apes; the doctored images and the portraits hidden from public view; the plaques bolted to the White House to insult him.

Two things run through all of it. One is racism — birtherism, ape imagery, spray-painted “BLM” smears — the oldest tropes aimed at a Black family, now industrialized with AI. The other is envy: Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, and Trump, who has campaigned shamelessly for one of his own, keeps reaching for cheap substitutes — a medal handed to him by another laureate, an invented “FIFA Peace Prize,” even a phone call to overturn a World Cup red card for the U.S. team. Read top to bottom, it is the portrait of a president who cannot stop attacking, demeaning, and lying about the man he most wants to be.

Trump For five years, Donald Trump promotes the racist “birther” lie that Barack Obama was not born in the United States and is an illegitimate president

Beginning in 2011, Trump made himself the most prominent promoter of the false “birther” conspiracy — that America’s first Black president was secretly foreign-born and therefore ineligible to hold office. He demanded Obama “show his birth certificate,” and when Obama released his long-form certificate on April 27, 2011, Trump claimed credit: “I am really proud that I was able to do something that nobody else could do.” He then kept pushing the lie for years, calling the document a possible “forgery,” and did not publicly concede that Obama was born in the U.S. until September 16, 2016, in the middle of his own presidential campaign. Built on the racist premise that a Black man could not legitimately be president, birtherism was the opening chapter of a fixation that has never ended.

Trump Trump posts what he claims is Barack Obama’s home address on Truth Social; days later an armed January 6 defendant is arrested in Obama’s D.C. neighborhood

On June 29, 2023, Trump reposted on Truth Social what he claimed was the home address of Barack Obama. Within days, Taylor Taranto — a January 6 defendant with an outstanding arrest warrant — reshared the post, drove to Obama’s Washington neighborhood, and was arrested there with two firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in his van, after posting “We got these losers surrounded!” and claiming to have a detonator. A former president’s private address broadcast to millions of followers, one of whom then showed up armed, is the Obama fixation made literal: rhetoric with real-world danger attached.

Trump Trump posts an AI-generated deepfake video showing Barack Obama being handcuffed by the FBI in the Oval Office and jailed in an orange jumpsuit

On July 20, 2025, Trump shared to Truth Social a fabricated AI video depicting FBI agents dragging Obama out of a chair in the Oval Office, cuffing him, and then showing him behind bars in an orange jumpsuit, set to the song “YMCA.” The post came two days after DNI Tulsi Gabbard said she was referring Obama-era officials to the DOJ. It is propaganda in its purest form: using generative AI to manufacture and broadcast the fantasy of imprisoning a political rival, blurring the line between a meme and a threat.

Trump Trump publicly accuses Barack Obama of “treason” — a capital crime — and his Justice Department opens a strike force and grand jury targeting Obama-era officials

On July 22, 2025, Trump stood in the Oval Office and accused his predecessor of “treason,” a crime punishable by death, over debunked claims — pushed by DNI Tulsi Gabbard — that the Obama administration had fabricated the finding that Russia interfered in the 2016 election. Within days the DOJ announced a “strike force,” and by August 4 Attorney General Pam Bondi had convened a grand jury to investigate Obama officials. Turning the machinery of federal law enforcement against a former president on a manufactured pretext is exactly the abuse of power an accountability project exists to document.

Trump Trump orders the official White House portraits of Barack Obama and both Bushes moved out of public view to a restricted private stairwell

On August 10, 2025, Trump had the official portraits of Obama, George W. Bush, and George H.W. Bush relocated from their traditional prominent placement to the top of the Grand Staircase — an area off-limits to the public and accessible only to the first family, Secret Service, and select staff. It broke decades of precedent. Months earlier, Obama’s portrait had already been swapped out of the Grand Foyer for a painting of Trump’s own Butler, Pennsylvania assassination-attempt scene. Petty as it looks, physically erasing a predecessor from the People’s House is of a piece with the larger campaign to delegitimize him.

Trump Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado wins the Nobel Peace Prize and dedicates it to Trump — who has spent years openly coveting the prize Obama won in 2009

When María Corina Machado was named the 2025 Nobel Peace laureate on October 10, 2025, she dedicated the honor to Trump, and later — during a White House visit — handed him the physical medal. The Norwegian Nobel Committee pointedly clarified that the prize is nontransferable and cannot be given away. The episode underscores a fixation Trump has never hidden: his resentment that Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, and his yearslong, very public campaign to be given one himself.

Trump Trump installs plaques on the White House “Walk of Fame” branding Obama “one of the most divisive political figures in American History” and blaming him for the “Russia Hoax”

On December 17, 2025, the White House mounted plaques beneath portraits on Trump’s new “Presidential Walk of Fame” that use official government property to insult his predecessors. Obama’s plaque calls him “one of the most divisive political figures in American History” and repeats Trump’s conspiracy theory that Obama “spied” on his 2016 campaign and created the “Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax.” Biden’s, hung next to an autopen instead of a portrait, calls him “the worst President in American History.” Turning the People’s House into a billboard for grievance is the fixation carved, literally, into brass.

Trump Trump shares a racist AI video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes, then refuses to apologize

On February 5, 2026, Trump posted a video to Truth Social that ended with the faces of Barack and Michelle Obama superimposed onto cartoon apes as “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” played. The White House first defended it, then deleted it and blamed a staffer. Trump said he “of course” condemned the racist portion but would not apologize, claiming he “didn’t see the full video.” Even Republican Sen. Tim Scott, who is Black, called it “the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House.” Depicting the first Black president and first lady as apes is one of the oldest and ugliest racist tropes in America — deployed here by the sitting president.

Trump Trump posts a doctored image of Barack and Michelle Obama boarding a graffiti-covered Air Force One tagged “BLM” and “Obama”

On July 5, 2026, Trump shared a falsified image showing the Obamas waving atop the stairs of an Air Force One defaced with spray-painted graffiti — including “BLM,” “Obama,” the “Yes We Can” slogan, and Arabic script reading “alhamdulillah” (“praise God”). The graffiti motif is a well-worn racist shorthand meant to evoke crime and “urban decay,” and the Arabic revives the same birther-era smear that Obama is a foreign Muslim. It came just months after the apes video — the same fixation, the same racism, now industrialized with AI image tools.

Trump Trump personally phones FIFA’s president to overturn a red card against the U.S. World Cup team — after FIFA invented a “Peace Prize” and gave it to him

Denied the Nobel Peace Prize he has openly craved since Obama won one, Trump has collected substitutes: FIFA created an inaugural “FIFA Peace Prize” and handed it to him at a Kennedy Center ceremony. Then, in July 2026, Trump personally called FIFA president Gianni Infantino to demand a review of the red card that had suspended U.S. striker Folarin Balogun — and FIFA reversed it, the first time since 1962 that a World Cup red card carried no suspension. A head of state leaning on a global sports body to fix a call for his home team is the same impulse behind the whole Obama fixation: the man who envies Obama’s stature will bend any institution — the DOJ, the Nobel committee, even a soccer match — to feel like the bigger man.
